| welcome 2005 |

consider this - new
year's eve, a play by the side of a bonfire followed by a
musical evening - in the serene lap of the himalayas!
join us at himalayan village sonapani for an exciting
evening on dec 31, 2004 -a sublime experience that you would
not forget for years to come!
himalayan village sonapani is 8-9 hrs drive from delhi,
if one plans to drive up. we suggest you start early (if the
fog lets you!) on the 31st morning. unlike grey and smoggy
delhi, daytime in our part of the mountains is very bright
and
sunny.....and warm too! (15 to 18 degrees). the nights
are cold (4 to 8 degrees) but the 'rum blanket', the
crackling bonfires, the 'traditionally' insulated mud
plastered/floored cottages and the cosy quilts with hot
water bottles tucked in are of great assistance!

| the play and the
performers |

this play
is a story of a village performer for whom his art is supreme.
written by vijaydan detha and directed & enacted by ajay
kumar in katha gayan style (that belongs to a traditional art
form of ancient periods) creates a dynamic flow of energy that
takes the story to a different dimension altogether. ajay has also
written the lyrics and composed the music for the play.
this play has also been performed at nsd's bharat rang mahotsava
2003 (national theatre festival) and was widely appreciated by the
audience as well as the critics.
ajay kumar is a graduate of national school of drama and
has, as an actor, been exploring the katha gayan style for many
years. in this venture he relies on various elements of
traditional indian theatre - using narrative music as a device
that helps to underline the theme and in the development of the
dramatic conflict.
accompanying ajay is a group called 'satvic'. with the
right mix of indian classical and contemporary music, they
experiment a lot with folk music. this fusion music group has done
many musical concerts including performances at sahitya kala
parishad, delhi and national school of drama, new delhi.
the group members includes:
- ajay and anil (vocals)
- santosh ( synth & guitar)
- gagan & mohit (percursion) |
