there are
two options for reaching himalayan village sonapani.
the first option is to take a train to kathgodam,
the railhead of this region. the train running
between kathgodam and delhi is called ranikhet
express.
the train no for delhi-kathgodam is 5013 while
kathgodam-delhi is 5014. the options
available are 2nd ac sleeper, 3rd ac sleeper and 2nd class sleeper.
the train leaves the old delhi railway station at
10.45 pm (normally from platform no. 3) and reaches kathgodam at 6.10 am next
morning.
the other option is to reach kathgodam by road. from
delhi, kathgodam is approximately 275 kms. to reach
kathgodam, one has to go via hapur, moradabad,
rampur, bilaspur, rudrapur and haldwani.
kathgodam is at the foothills and from here we begin
our hill journey. one has to cover 69 kms of these
winding roads, driving through bhimtal, bhowali,
ramgarh and nathuakhan to reach village satoli.
at village satoli we park our vehicle at mr. govind
ram's house and walk for about half an
hour through the village road flanked by orchards, fields and village
houses.
it is a pleasant and almost a flat walk. and please do not worry about your
luggage (though we would prefer that you travel
light). and if your kids can’t walk that
long, we have our own transport company to carry
them along - a fleet of ponies!.

if
you are driving on your own or your driver is on this
route for the first time, here are some points of
consideration.
bypass the crowds
if driving from delhi, please ensure that you necessarily
take the hapur and moradabad bypasses. if, by mistake, you
enter these cities, be sure of loosing at least an hour at
both the places.
left from rampur
once you reach rampur from delhi please watch out for a
left turn to nainital. at times one may miss out on this
turn and reach barielly instead. similarly people coming
form lucknow and barielly have to watch out for this right
turn.
bhimtal to the right
after crossing kathgodam and ranibagh, there is major
bifurcation of the road. the left one goes to nainital and
the right one to bhimtal. you have to take the right one!
confusing bhowali
a u-shaped turn welcomes you to bhowali. some 100
meters ahead is a non-descript turn towards the
right. this is the road that you have to now drive
on.
don't go to mukteshwar
there's just one more choice left to be made. after
ramgarh, there is a bifurcation. the road on the right
going upwards is for mukteshwar. please take the road on
the left, going downhill. |
